some alchemies [heavy breathing] 2022

some alchemies [heavy breathing] notions that matter, in all their processes, have no past, present or emergent future; that they are immersed in a continuum of becoming. Beginning with a series of situational and material prompts, some alchemies [heavy breathing] activates and evolves over the course of the exhibition through sound works, performance, dance, text and material transformations. These gestures amplify speeds and scales, rhythms and repetitions, cycles and serendipities, collectively intensifying sensations of movement and flow.

Exhibition Contributors: James Carey, Bridie Lunney, Joseph Beuys, Martina Copley, Leslie Eastman, Torie Nimmervoll, Lilian Steiner, and Rosie Westbrook.

With thanks to RMIT Art Collection, Metro Tunnel Creative Program, M & G Industrial supplies, Herzog Steel and Vlaho Burum for his generosity and expertise. This exhibition is part of Melbourne Design Week 2022, an initiative of the Victorian Government in collaboration with the NGV.

The bluestone displayed in some alchemies [heavy breathing] was collected after the archaeological dig that occurred on the site behind Young & Jackson’s pub as part of the Metro Tunnel project. It was provided to James Carey and Bridie Lunney by the Metro Tunnel Creative Program as part of an artist initiative to retell the stories of the city’s history.
