a surrender [cheviot hill] 2025

a surrender [cheviot hill] Tasmanian oak, organic cotton dyed with salt water from Monmar [Point Nepean], dimensions variable, 2025.

According to future mapping of our warming planet, NASA predicts that complete breakdown of our global polar ice caps and glaciers’ melt will result in ocean level rise of more than 70 metres. Considering this, Monmar [Point Nepean National Park] would be inundated, sparing perhaps Cheviot Hill, the site where Australia’s Prime Minister Harold Holt disappeared while swimming in 1967. a surrender [cheviot hill] is a work submerged into the same salt water and interstitial tidal zone of Cheviot Hill, becoming a marker of a potential future, and making connections to Monmar’s [Point Nepean’s] military and quarantine past.

This project was made with the assistance of the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery’s Artist in Residency Program. Many thanks to all those involved for allowing the time and space for research and exploration.

Many thanks to Pete for assistance in making a surrender [cheviot hill].

This project was created at Monmar on Bunurong country – always was, always will be.
